(Michael Kovac\/Getty Images for AFI)<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Somebody once told me <em>Donkey<\/em> is getting his own movie.<\/p><p>DreamWorks Animation has officially announced that a <em>Shrek<\/em> spinoff film centered on the character of Donkey is headed to movie theaters. It will arrive on big screens on June 30, 2028.<\/p><p>The studio&nbsp;announced the news&nbsp;on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DaBLF5gB_F6\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Instagram<\/a>&nbsp;Thursday.<\/p><p>\"Start heating up those waffle irons. DONKEY is setting out on his very own adventure June 30, 2028,\" the post's caption reads.<\/p><p>The new movie will be an origin story following how Donkey came to be, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2026\/06\/donkey-eddie-murphy-shrek-spinoff-release-date-1236967592\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Deadline<\/a>, which broke the story. Eddie Murphy will once again voice the animated talking animal.<\/p><p><em>The Lego Batman Movie<\/em>'s Charlie Bean is set to direct&nbsp;<em>Donkey<\/em>, while Matt Flynn will co-direct. Rebecca Huntley will produce it.<\/p><p>Murphy previously spoke about this upcoming <em>Donkey<\/em> spinoff in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/shrek-5-eddie-murphy-donkey-spinoff\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Screen Rant<\/a> in July 2025.<\/p><p>\"We\u2019re doing a Donkey one, and that\u2019ll [be released] three years from now,\" Murphy said at the time. \u201c<em>Donkey<\/em>\u2018s going to be like how Puss in Boots had his own movie, Donkey\u2019s going to have his own movie \u2014 [his] own little story with his dragon wife and his kids that are half-dragon and half-donkeys. They\u2019ve written this funny story.\"<\/p><p>A fifth <em>Shrek<\/em> film is set to release in theaters a year ahead of the <em>Donkey<\/em> movie on June 30, 2027.<\/p><p>DreamWorks previously made two other <em>Shrek<\/em> spinoff films. <em>Puss in Boots<\/em> was released in 2011, while its sequel, <em>Puss in Boots: The Last Wish<\/em>, debuted in 2022.<\/p><p>Copyright \u00a9 2026, ABC Audio.
