LONDON (AP) \u2014 Serena Williams\u2019 doubles campaign at Queen\u2019s Club could be over after one match.<\/p>\n
Victoria Mboko, the American star\u2019s doubles partner, retired from her singles match against Karolina Pliskova on Wednesday after sustaining a knee injury in the second set.<\/p>\n
Williams and Mboko had won their opening doubles match Tuesday \u2014 in the 44-year-old Williams\u2019 return to professional tennis after nearly four years away from the sport \u2014 and are scheduled to play again Thursday.<\/p>\n
The 19-year-old Canadian slipped behind the baseline and immediately grabbed her left knee while facing Pliskova. Mboko lost the first set 6-2 and was up 4-3 in the second and trying to break with Pliskova serving at deuce.<\/p>\n
Mboko got up on her own but then told a physiotherapist there was \u201cno stability right now.\u201d<\/p>\n
She walked gingerly to her bench and put a towel to her face as she sat down. Minutes later, she retired from the match.<\/p>\n
Williams had previously announced that she will also play doubles at the Berlin Open next week.<\/p>\n
On Tuesday, Williams and Mboko beat third-seeded duo Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe 7-6 (2), 6-2 in Williams\u2019 first professional match since the 2022 U.S. Open. They\u2019re scheduled to face Leylah Fernandez and Laura Siegemund in the quarterfinals.<\/p>\n
