According to our news partner KETK, Rivera, who had flown to Miami from the DFW Airport, found out this morning immediately after reaching cell service at the end of her cruise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs soon as we got to Florida this morning,\u201d Rivera said, \u201cI turned on my phone, got my airplane mode off and I went to my Spirit app. It turned out that Spirit canceled all their flights because they\u2019re no longer in business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As she opened the Spirit Airlines app, she received a pop-up saying all flights were canceled, effective immediately.<!--more--> The airline also said they are unable help rebook flights, but would issue automatic refunds.<\/p>\n<p>Rivera said she had heard the company was experiencing bankruptcy, but never expected the shutdown to happen so soon or on such short a notice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was pretty stressful because having to buy a ticket for short notice is pretty expensive when you have to, again, just get a short notice ticket.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\">\n<div class=\"ad-unit__content\">\n<div id=\"acm-ad-tag-mr1_ab-mr1_ab\" data-slot=\"{&quot;is_oop&quot;:false,&quot;is_companion&quot;:true,&quot;sizes&quot;:[[[1280,0],[[300,250],[620,366]]],[[1024,0],[[300,250],[620,366]]],[[768,0],[[300,250],[325,204],[325,508]]],[[641,0],[[300,250],[325,204],[325,508]]],[[0,0],[[300,250],[325,204],[325,508]]]],&quot;size&quot;:[300,250]}\" data-unit=\"\/5678\/nx.ketk\/news\/local_news\" data-fbonly=\"false\" data-refids=\"\" data-not-refids=\"\" data-targeting=\"{&quot;kw&quot;:&quot;east-texan-finds-way-back-home-after-spirit-airline-shutdown&quot;,&quot;pos&quot;:&quot;mr1_ab&quot;,&quot;fold&quot;:&quot;atf&quot;,&quot;category&quot;:&quot;local_news&quot;}\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Luckily, Rivera was able to book a flight back home, although it didn\u2019t come without a price.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a physical disability called spinal muscular atrophy,\u201d Rivera explained. \u201cBecause of this I have to use the power chair for full-time mobility. Traveling is already difficult, and can be difficult for an able-bodied person. Then you add the disability and the 420 lb. power chair on top of it, it just adds another layer to the whole thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The cost was the reason for Rivera\u2019s initial choice of Spirit as an airline, as it was known to be fairly inexpensive compared to others. With no refund yet received, Rivera opted for the most economical choice, which would fly her back to Texas, but not to DFW.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThankfully, I was able to find another airline to just fly me home,\u201d she said. \u201cBut then the problem I ran into there is that I\u2019m flying into the most affordable ticket again, just trying to save some money [ \u2026 ] I have to fly into Love Field [Airport], but my van, my wheelchair accessible van that I drive, is at DFW.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\">\n<div class=\"ad-unit__content\">\n<div id=\"acm-ad-tag-mr2_ab-mr2_ab\" data-slot=\"{&quot;is_oop&quot;:false,&quot;is_companion&quot;:true,&quot;sizes&quot;:[[[1280,0],[[300,250],[620,366]]],[[1024,0],[[300,250],[620,366]]],[[768,0],[[300,250],[325,204],[325,508]]],[[641,0],[[300,250],[325,204],[325,508]]],[[0,0],[[300,250],[325,204],[325,508]]]],&quot;size&quot;:[300,250]}\" data-unit=\"\/5678\/nx.ketk\/news\/local_news\" data-fbonly=\"false\" data-refids=\"\" data-not-refids=\"\" data-targeting=\"{&quot;kw&quot;:&quot;east-texan-finds-way-back-home-after-spirit-airline-shutdown&quot;,&quot;pos&quot;:&quot;mr2_ab&quot;,&quot;fold&quot;:&quot;atf&quot;,&quot;category&quot;:&quot;local_news&quot;}\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>With a new flight set and booked, Rivera plans to be back in Texas by tomorrow at 5 p.m. Rivera is staying positive, despite the setback, and opts to look at the bright side.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe way that I see it is that this is just meant to happen,\u201d Rivera said. \u201cI probably wasn\u2019t supposed to be on that airplane for whatever reason. Now, I\u2019m just hanging out at my best friend\u2019s house for the rest of the evening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Choosing to see the silver lining, Rivera said the situation served as a learning experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI learned a very, very valuable and expensive lesson that when you\u2019re trying to save money or trying to cut corners, that can be more expensive,\u201d Rivera said. \u201cSo this is just another hurdle that life has thrown at me. It\u2019s not that I deserve it, it\u2019s not that I\u2019m unlucky.
