Smith did, however, state that the sheriff\u2019s office had joined the 287(g) program, claiming it strengthens their ability to cooperate with federal immigration authorities and to ensure that those who commit crimes in Smith County are held accountable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis program not only provides the Smith County Sheriff\u2019s Office with the ability to ensure the immigration laws are enforced within Smith County, but it also mandates we enforce the Federal Immigration Laws,\u201d Smith said.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In an attempt to appease residents\u2019 anxiety, Smith stated that his office does not conduct immigration raids or sweeps in any schools, neighborhoods, churches or businesses.<\/p>\n<div class=\"nexstar-minutemedia-player-container\" data-minutemedia-viewport=\"desktop\" data-player-id=\"o5noyx2a\" data-stn-player=\"\" data-s2n-api=\"minuteMediaS2NApi\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cOur deputies only exercise immigration authority during regular law enforcement duties, when an individual is lawfully detained or arrested for a criminal offense,\u201d Smith said.<\/p>\n<p>Smith emphasized that he does understand that immigration is a sensitive topic and that he is committed to keeping open and transparent communication moving forward.<\/p>\n<p>A new agreement with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement that will enable the Smith County Sheriff\u2019s Office to receive reimbursement for immigration enforcement work was unanimously approved by the Smith County Commissioners Court on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>An agreement that permitted trained officers to enforce limited immigration authority under federal supervision was previously approved by the court earlier this year. Sheriff Larry Smith said the new contract includes a reimbursement element for time and equipment used for ICE operations.
