HUNTSVILLE \u2014 An East Texas man was executed at 6:40 p.m. on Thursday evening, after killing his girlfriend\u2019s 13-month-old daughter in what the couple claimed was an exorcism to cast a demon from the infant\u2019s body. Our news partner KETK reports that hours before the execution the U.S. Supreme Court denied Blaine Milam\u2019s final appeal for a stay. Milam opted out of having a spiritual advisor in his final hours.<\/p>\n
Milam, then 18, and his girlfriend, Jesseca Carson, were arrested in December 2008 after police discovered the body of Carson\u2019s daughter, Amora, inside their home. The child had suffered extensive injuries, including bite marks, blunt-force trauma and signs of sexual assault.<\/p>\n
The medical examiner testified that Amora\u2019s cause of death could not be pinpointed because of the sheer number of fatal injuries. Prosecutors said Milam and Carson beat the baby with a hammer and over a 30-hour period bit, strangled and mutilated her.<\/p>\n
The couple initially gave shifting accounts, claiming Amora had hurt herself or eaten insulation, before admitting they had tried to \u201cbeat the demons out\u201d of her during an exorcism.<\/p>\n
In 2010, Milam was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death at age 20, while Carson received life in prison without parole.<\/p>\n
Over the years, Milam insisted he was not responsible and claimed Carson orchestrated the alleged exorcism. His attorneys also argued he was intellectually disabled, which would make him ineligible for execution.<\/p>\n
Twice, in 2019 and 2021, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals halted Milam\u2019s scheduled executions to review disability claims. His lawyers cited evaluations from three of four experts who concluded he was intellectually disabled. Ultimately, courts rejected those arguments, clearing the way for Tuesday\u2019s execution.<\/p>\n
Milam\u2019s last meal consisted of a cheeseburger, oven-fried potatoes, green beans, pinto beans, sliced bread, scrambled eggs, country gravy, a sausage patty, pears, biscuits, tea and water.<\/p>\n
His last words were released in the following statement:<\/p>\n
\u201cI would like to give a special thanks to all of you for showing me kindness, compassion, empathy, love and support and believing in me. Thank you for everything that y\u2019all have done. I would also like to thank the directors of chaplaincy of TDCJ for opening up the faith base program on death row and allowed me to be accepted into it to find Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. And if any of you would like to see me again, I implore all of you no matter who you are to accept Jesus Christ as you Lord and Savior and we will meet again. I love you all, bring me home Jesus.\u201d
