Treatment options are not always safe and could possibly lead to other complications, leading Komissarov’s team to find other methods.

“This project is a powerful example of how UT Tyler is advancing research that directly impacts
patient care,” UT Tyler School of Medicine Dean Sue Cox said. “We’re proud to support work that not only addresses urgent health challenges like empyema but also provides meaningful opportunities for our students to grow as scientists and future physicians.”

UT Tyler said SignaBlok and Komissarov’s team is aiming to to add an agent to the treatment that targets both clots and inflammation. The goal with this agent is to reduce swelling and drain infected fluid which could make the treatment more effective.

“This isn’t just about investing in a treatment to extend and improve lives today,” Komissarov said. “It’s about paving the way for future scientists and physicians to continue this work. None of this would be possible without the tremendous support of UT Tyler, especially President Julie Philley, MD.
