Canton residents pushback against Grand Saline Creek Reservoir For residents, it was a big win on Wednesday afternoon in Pittsburg. After a nearly 4-hour meeting, the Region D Water Planning Group representatives voted down the proposed Grand Saline Creek Reservoir as an alternative water source for the city of Canton. The board will also send a letter of opposition to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).

“It’s a Pandora’s box that was open and nobody really probably thought about the impact of what it would do when they open it,” Van Zandt County Commissioner Mitch Curtis said.

The project proposed by the city was met with scrutiny as thousands of acres of land would be flooded to fill the reservoir. During the meeting, residents booed Canton Mayor LouAnn Everett as she got up to speak during allotted public comment portion.

“I think it’s over $1 million worth of revenue that’s already been lost just from the property values dropping,” Curtis said.

State Rep. Brent Money was at the meeting and said he and Senator Bob Hall are working on legislation to end city’s eminent domain ability for property outside their jurisdictions.

“If a city wants to condemn property within its own city limits, it can do that. I just don’t believe and I think a lot of the citizens of Texas agree with me that we shouldn’t have people having their land taken by a government that is not accountable to them,” Money said.

“It’s too early to comment on that and need to evaluate ramifications of today’s happenings. The city’s plans are to focus on recommended strategies of new wells and recycling project in the near future,” Everett told KETK News after the board’s decision.

The final say on the reservoir will come from the TCEQ, residents said they are not worried about the permit passing and have full faith their fight will end at the meeting.

“What I would hope for is that the city of Canton would realize they made a mistake and apologize and remove their submitted request. They’re probably not going to do that, but just to shut it down and take it off the table, then life could go back to normal,” Curtis said.

The board also addressed the Marvin Nichols reservoir. Region D voted unanimously for a mediation agreement to add Toledo Bend as an alternate water source. There will also be an impact study on agriculture, jobs and citizens.

CAMP COUNTY – Our news partners at KETK report that a huge step was taken against the Grand Saline Creek Reservoir on Thursday as a local water planning group unanimously voted against the project.
