People who live near the facility are claiming health issues, including several cancer diagnoses, due to exposure to the company\u2019s emissions. Four of the six people suing Eastman claim their cancer fights happened as a result of the companies\u2019 high level of dangerous emissions. Eastman\u2019s Longview facility opened in the 1950\u2019s and processes raw chemicals like ethane and propane, that are ultimately used to create plastics. This process reportedly results into the release of thousands of pounds of \u2018ethylene oxide\u2019 into the air in Longview every year.<\/p>\n
The colorless and odorless gas, also known as EtO, is a component in anti freeze, plastics and adhesives. <\/p>\n
The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) puts EtO gas in their highest risk category, saying it can cause breast cancer in women and lymphoid cancer in men. From 1987 to 2022, Eastman self-reported that it released more than 565,000 pounds of EtO out of their Longview facility.<\/p>\n
According to the lawsuit, the impact is much bigger due to \u201cfugitive emissions,\u201d which they claim could be up to 30,000 extra pounds in the last 20 years. Four of the women who are suing have lived near the facility for decades and are breast cancer survivors.<\/p>\n
According to a 2018 assessment by the Environmental Protection Agency, the area around Eastman has been identified for potential elevated health risks. <\/p>\n
The federal report does say the company has been working to reduce those emissions and even saw a 78% decrease in cancer risk from 2014 to 2018. Eastman said they are aware of the lawsuit and empathize with the plaintiffs but would not comment on pending litigation. <\/p>\n
Eastman is being accused of two counts of negligence for the emissions, one count of \u2018loss of consortium\u2019 on behalf of two spouses, claiming they have also suffered due to the health of their wives.<\/p>\n
The company has until Sept. 4 to file a response to the lawsuit.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
