According to our news partner KETK, Pets Fur People in Smith County has more than 100 animals in their care, all of them needing “furever” homes.

“That does not even include the ones that are abandoned, found on the road, dropped off at our fence, tied to the fence, left in boxes,” Pets Fur People executive director Holli Jones said.

They are just one of many shelters facing overcrowding and no longer taking in furry friends. Jones said that the summer is when they see an uptick in abandonment.

“Summer hits, and they’re going on vacation. They decide they don’t want the dog or it’s not a good fit for their family, and they change their mind, so they just abandon it,” Jones said.

Another issue seen in East Texas is a lack of spaying and neutering. When owners discover their dog is pregnant, they often abandon or surrender it.

On social media, the Smith County Animal Shelter is asking for help from the community.

They are in desperate need of owners for their 27 dogs, including ten puppies.

“They allow them to breed, they have the puppies, they cannot take care of them. There are not enough homes for them,” Jones said.

Jones said it breaks their heart every day to be forced to turn away these precious animals.

“It’s a heartbreak. I mean, it’s just at the end of the day, sometimes you walk away and go, oh, I wish I could have helped some more,” Jones said.

She is calling for East Texans to play their part by spaying and neutering, adopting or fostering, so shelters can continue to serve the most defenseless bunch in our communities.

SMITH COUNTY — Pets Fur People has turned away animals for more than a month because they are at max capacity.
