New Years Party Turns DeadlyVan Zandt County — A New Years Party turned deadly in Canton. Early Wenesday morning officers responded to a shooting resulting in the death of Alan Bates, 61, of Plano. According to witnesses Bates became involved in an argument earlier, that couple left before things continued to escalate. Authorities were told at a point later on, Bates became upset again this time was asked to leave.

Onlookers say Bates retrieved a gun from his vehicle and came back to the home yelling out threats of killing people. An attendee then armed himself with his own handgun shooting Bates after entering the living area of the home. The shooter has not been charged. Numerous witnesses have been interviewed. Once the case is completed, it will be referred to the Van Zandt County Grand Jury for review.
