Marshall’s Battle Against Litter
Posted/updated on: May 1, 2019 at 2:02 pmMARSHALL – The City of Marshall unveiled a new “no littering sign.†It is part of a larger anti-litter education campaign that the city is promoting in an effort to get citizens to tackle the litter problem. In an effort to create a cleaner and safer environment and maintain a focus on creating an attractive community, the City Commission passed legislation last week strengthening the existing litter regulations.
The litter regulations now include:
*Prohibiting individuals from creating a potential danger to public health, safety and welfare by littering, particularly on private property.
*Requiring business owners to pick-up trash on their properties daily;
*Requiring trash containers on all construction sites;
*Prevents unsecured trash in vehicles and allows citations to be issued based on presence of unsecured trash;
*Similar to that of grass and weed violations, litter violators will receive one notice per offense, repeat offenders will be cited immediately;
*Allows the City to foreclose upon liens to recover actual cost plus interest;
*Increases fines of up to $2,000.00
In addition to the revised ordinance, the city staff is currently working with the Image Advisory Board to establish a Keep Marshall Beautiful affiliate that will serve as an organization to help inspire residents to keep Marshall clean and litter free.
