December in Tyler was Warm and Wet

TYLER – The month of December 2018 was warmer and wetter than normal in Tyler. The National Weather Service says, compared with December 2017, the month was 1.8 degrees warmer, and 0.01 inch drier. Total yearly rainfall was 4.09 inches more in 2018 than in 2017. Both years saw well above normal rainfall. 2018 was, though still warmer than normal, 1.3 degrees cooler than 2017. The mean temperature was 67.2 degrees. The mean temperature was 1.6 degrees warmer than normal, and rainfall was 11.51 inches greater than normal.

The coldest temperature in 2018 was 11 degrees on January 17, with the hottest reading of 106 on July 22. The temperature reached or exceeded 100 on 11 days, and reached or exceeded 90 on 85 days. The 100-degree exceedances were slightly above normal, while the 90-degree exceedances were near normal.

In the 2017-2018 cold season, the minimum temperature reached or fell below 32 degrees on 30 days beginning nearly three weeks early on October 29, 2017. This was slightly more than the normal number of sub-freezing days. The temperature failed to rise above freezing on three days also slightly more than normal.

Monthly climate extremes in 2018 were: February second wettest with 9.20 inches, May–third warmest with 78.9 degrees, May fifth driest with 0.87 inch, June fifth warmest with 85.3 degrees and October third wettest with 12.19 inches.

Seasonal climate extremes were: Winter 2017-2018 was the third wettest winter with 18.97 inches; summer 2018 tied with 1934 for the fourth warmest with an average temperature of 85.5 degrees; autumn 2018 was the wettest since record-keeping began in 1883 with 24.64 inches, replacing the autumn of 1985 when 23.91 inches of rain fell.
