Posted/updated on: January 2, 2019 at 11:20 am

LONGVIEW – Longview police say a suspect wounded by an officer fired multiple shots at the officer before he returned the fire. Randy Carl Jeffrey, 33, of Mount Pleasant, was treated and released at a Longview hospital, then booked into the Gregg County Jail. On December 23rd, Officer William Smeltzer responded to a suspicious person call on East Marshall Avenue near American Legion Boulevard. Authorities say there was soon a confrontation with Jeffrey. The officer was not injured. As is the department’s normal practice in an officer involved shooting incident, Smeltzer was placed on administrative leave pending the investigation which is being conducted by the Texas Rangers.

Besides the attempted capital murder charge, Jeffrey is also being held on several warrants. Jail records show he is also facing charges of theft of property less than $2,500 with two or more previous convictions and, in Harrison County, he is charged with Burglary of a habitation. His bonds total $450,000.
