Cleanup Continues Following Longview’s Weekend Storm

LONGVIEW – The City of Longview and the American Red Cross are continuing to operate an emergency shelter in the wake of severe weather that knocked out power n the area. The Shelter, which opened Monday night, will remain open as long as needed. It’s located at the Longview Exhibit Building at the Maude Cobb Activity Complex on Jaycee Drive. The shelter has cots and blankets. Showers are available, but you will need to bring soap, shampoo, and a towel. Also, remember to bring any medications or medical equipment if necessary. The Red Cross says anyone affected by the storms may also call its 24-hour dispatch number, 866-505-4801.
City of Longview Development Services office has no power and is temporarily closed. A temporary office has been set up at Maude Cobb Convention & Activity Center located on Grand Boulevard. The office can also be reached by phone: 903-237-1060.
City of Longview Parks & Recreation office has no power and is temporarily closed. All venue reservations including pavilions have been cancelled for Monday, May 30. As of now, this week’s Pre-Session Learn to Swim classes at Longview Swim Center are still scheduled. If you have Parks Department related questions please call 903-237-1270.
Paula Martin Jones Recreation Center and Green Street Recreation Center are also without power and are temporarily closed.
Debris Cleanup:
The City of Longview Sanitation Division reminds residential sanitation customers that Bulky Item Collection is available for disposal of yard debris. You can go to https://www.longviewtexas.gov/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=969 for more information.
AEP SWEPCO:
Electric power outages should be reported to AEP Southwestern Electric Power Company at 888-218-3919. The company is also available on Twitter as @SWEPCoNews. Their website is https://www.swepco.com. Please be patient and courteous as you report outages. Extra crews have been brought in and they are working diligently to restore power to all customers.
Traffic Safety:
Many traffic lights are still out of service so remember to drive defensively. If the traffic signal is totally dark, all drivers are to stop at the intersection, then proceed as if the intersection had stop signs controlling all approaches unless law enforcement or other authorized persons are directing traffic or there are portable stop signs located on select approaches. If the signal is in flashing mode, drivers having a flashing red light are to stop and yield to other drivers before proceeding through the intersection. Drivers having a flashing yellow light are to proceed with caution.
