TYLER — The Tyler Police Department has released its crime statistics for 2016. Overall Part One crimes — offenses deemed the most serious in nature — are down 1.26%. Part One violent crimes (homicides, sexual assault, robbery, and aggravated assault) are up 18.67% from last year. But the Part One violent crime number is lower than it was in 2012 and 2013. Part One property crimes (burglary, theft, auto theft) are down 3.08%. Part Two crimes are up 7.61% but also show a decrease from 2012 and 2013. The statistics indicate crime rates over the past five calendar years.
According to a news release, Police Chief Jimmy Toler is very proud of his troops as they work to identify and address crime. Police say this is most evident in officers’ efforts to address robberies, gambling, illegal drug violations, and driving under the influence (DUI). Toler says a commitment to community policing and strong community relationships continue to be the police department’s focus.
