Noonday Highlighted Before the Commissioners CourtTYLER – Smith County Commissioners learned about the community of Noonday during Tuesday’s commissioners’ court session. Mayor Mike Turman, pictured with his wife Vivian, who is a Noonday Alderman, gave a brief presentation about the history of Noonday. Noonday was the first city to be invited to come before the commissioner’s as part of Smith County Judge Nathaniel Moran’s new initiative, “Connecting Communities.”

Noonday was formed in 1876, when two men moved there to start the Noonday Baptist Church. It was named Noonday after the community in Georgia where one of the founders was from, Turman said. The area surrounding the church became known as Noonday. The town was incorporated in 1981. Best known for its sweet onions, Noonday has a population of 777 people and is located about 10 miles southwest of downtown Tyler.

Smith County has 11 cities winthin its boundaries, Tyler, Lindale, Whitehouse, Arp, Troup, Bullard, Winona, New Chapel Hill, Noonday, Overton and Hideaway. Other city leaders will be invited to the commissioners court meeting to be recognized and give presentations about their city, as well as provide information about the state of each city and future plans.
