HENDERSON – Additional charges may be filed against a Troup man arrested for kidnapping. Benny O’Neal Cagle Jr., 53, was arrested Wednesday in Panola county after being accused of kidnapping a woman from the Price Community in Rusk County. Cagle is currently in the Rusk County jail under a $200,000 bond on a charge of aggravated kidnapping. Rusk County Sheriff Jeff Price talked about the possibility of more charges during a Friday afternoon news conference.
It all started Wednesday morning when officers were notified of the kidnapping. It was reported the suspect had fired shots during the kidnapping and was believed to be armed with more than one firearm. A third person who was present during the abduction was injured while trying to stop the kidnapping.
It was thought that he had possibly traveled to Panola County with the victim. A Panola County Sheriff’s deputy saw a vehicle matching the description of the suspect’s vehicle on County Road 455, southeast of Carthage. When additional deputies arrived, they tried to stop the vehicle, but he fled, traveling through the Flatwoods and Logan communities. The chase ended about 4 miles later.
Cagle’s car left the road and drove into a tree line. He then fled on foot. He was taken into custody, without incident, a short time later. The woman he abducted was unharmed.
