A Slight Uptick In Area Unemployment

AUSTIN (AP/STAFF) – The state’s unemployment rate is holding steady. In East Texas, it is going up slightly. The Texas Workforce Commission reports the state’s unemployment rate in January held at 4.8%. The January number is from the latest statewide reporting period by the commission. Nationwide unemployment during February, the latest U.S. reporting period, was 4.7%. In East Texas, Tyler’s unemployment rate went up to 4.7%. It had been 4.3% in December and January of Last year. Longview’s jobless total in January was 6.6%. It was 5.9% in December.
Amarillo and Lubbock had the lowest unemployment in Texas during January at 3.4%, according to a commission statement. The McAllen-Edinburg-Mission area had the state’s highest jobless rate in January at 9%.
Commission Chairman Andres Alcantar says Texas started 2017 on a high note, in terms of workforce, by adding 51,300 jobs in January.
