Woman Falls For Jury Duty Scam

TYLER – A jury duty scam has resurfaced in Smith County. It starts with someone claiming to be law enforcement calling to say you missed jury duty and will have to pay a fine or be arrested. On Wednesday, an 80 year old Smith County woman didn’t fall for the scam. But, another Smith county woman, who got such a call, gave the caller $1,300 over the phone. Smith County Jury Coordinator Lisa Bennett “Nobody from the Smith County Sheriff’s Office is going to call you and request money over the phone.”

Here’s how the scam works:
The caller asks the resident to put money on a green dot card, which is like a debit card. The caller stays on the phone with the person while they go to the store, buy the cards and tell the caller the card number so they can extract the money before hanging up. If you get such a call, If you live in the city limits, call 903-531-1000 to report it. For those victims who live outside the city limits, Please call 903-566-6600 and make a report.
