OVERTON – Greg Grant has been named Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service’s County Extension Agent-Horticulture, Smith County, effective October 1. That’s according to a joint announcement by the Smith County Commissioners Court and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service’s headquarters in Overton. Larry Pierce, AgriLife Regional Program Leader, told the Commissioners Court Tuesday that Grant has had a long and distinguished career in horticulture.
As a new county agent, Grant will participate in the 30-day FIRST STEP For Success program in Counties prior to beginning his career in Smith County in November. FIRST STEP provides the new agent an opportunity to develop a basic understanding of the role of county agent and gives the agent the opportunity to observe and experience the day-to-day operations of a typical county Extension Office.
Grant was born in Tyler and raised in Longview and is a seventh generation East Texan. Grant is a prolific garden writer and is currently finishing up The Rose Rustlers for Texas A&M Press. He works as a research associate for Stephen F. Austin State University.
