TYLER – A fund is set up to help a Smith County Sheriff’s deputy who was critically injured in a shooting in 2005. Deputy Sherman Dollison is back in the hospital. Deputy Dollison was shot five times by a gunman at the Smith County Courthouse. The gunman, who was later shot to death, was armed with an AK-47 and was wearing a bullet proof vest. After after months of hospitalization and rehab, Dollison was back on the job, working as a detective for the sheriff’s department. He was admitted to the hospital last week, and is now experiencing life threatening complications directly related to his previous injuries. An account has been set up in his name at Southside Bank.
The gunman was David Hernandez Arroyo, 43. His shooting spree began on the courthouse steps where Arroyo shot and killed his wife and wounded his son. He next shot Dollison. He fled the courthouse in his truck, still shooting at following officers. He jumped from the truck after a sheriff’s deputy rammed his truck and their bumpers became locked. As he was fleeing, on foot, he was shot and killed by Tyler Police SWAT commander Lt. Rusty Jacks.
