Smith County Habitat for Humanity Gets Big Vets’ Commission GrantTYLER – Habitat for Humanity of Smith County has received a $100,000 grant from the Texas Veterans Commission Fund for Veterans’ Assistance. According to a news release, the grant will be used to make critical repairs on the homes of veterans in need of decent, accessible housing. Those repairs include modifications such as creating handicap accessible bathrooms, leveling of floor and new floor installation, and retooling kitchen cabinets to improve accessibility.

Since 2012, Smith County Habitat has been repairing the homes of veterans through its critical repair division. To date, the organization has completed 90 critical repairs or modification projects for veterans. The organization estimates that the Texas Veterans Commission grant will enable them to impact the lives of 9 veterans, 12 dependents of veterans, and 3 surviving spouses.

Veterans in need of home repair who live in Smith, Anderson, Cherokee, Van Zandt, Henderson, Upshur, and Wood counties and who own their own home should contact Habitat for Humanity at 903-595-6630 for details on qualifying for help. Jack Wilson, Smith County Habitat’s Chief Executive Officer, says he and his colleagues are very grateful for the grant. In the news release, Wilson says the money “enables us to give back to those who have given so much for our country.”
