Roy Smith Convicted of Vicious AttackTYLER — A man accused of seriously injuring a Tyler woman will be spending a long time behind bars. After deliberating around an hour Thursday morning, a Tyler jury convicted Roy Edward Smith, 34, of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Then, after deliberating around ten minutes that afternoon, the panel sentenced Brown to life in prison. He was accused of beating and stabbing Victoria Massey numerous time in June of 2012 as she left her Moore Grocery Loft apartment on North Broadway. She was left for dead, but survived.

Police say they got a key break last June through a DNA sample from a sock that contained a rock Smith allegedly used to strike Massey in the head before the stabbing. After getting the DNA sample, Brown was easy to find. He was locked up in the Allred Prison Unit in Wichita County. Smith was interviewed in prison and a secondary DNA test was performed to confirm the first test. Investigators received a second confirmation that a positive DNA match on the sock used to strike Massey in the head matched the DNA of Smith.
