New Revelation as Tiede Case Heads Back to Court

CARTHAGE (AP/Staff) — There’s a new revelation in the case of Bernie Tiede, and jurors will soon decide whether it’s enough to keep him from going back to prison. Tiede’s lawyer Jodi Cole says she will tell the court Marjorie Nugent used Tiede to launder money, something not previously revealed. Tiede was a Carthage funeral director who befriended Nugent, 40 years his senior at her husband’s funeral. He then spent her money freely, shot her, and hid her body in a freezer for nine months. Tiede’s case could have been written for Hollywood, and when it was, the resulting attention got him out of a life sentence. The real-life case featured in the 2011 dark comedy “Bernie” heads back to a courtroom April 6 for a new sentencing trial, two decades after Nugent was killed.
