TYLER — Since 3,000 mailers were sent out to warn people with arrest warrants about the upcoming Smith County Warrant Round Up, more than 100 cases have been resolved, according to officials. The county’s fourth annual round up is set for Saturday, March 5. The Smith County Judicial Compliance Department mailed out 3,000 yellow flyers February 19 to people with outstanding arrest warrants for delinquent, court-ordered fines and fees. Those people have until Saturday to take care of the outstanding warrants in person before Smith County law enforcement officers begin searching for them at their homes, businesses and/or schools.
Smith County Judicial Compliance Supervisor Sheryl Keel said Smith County joined in the Great Texas Warrant Round Up four years ago, and each year it has grown. There will be about 300 jurisdictions participating in this year’s round up across the state, she said. From the round ups, Smith County collected $132,000 in 2015; $90,000 in 2014; and $80,000 in 2013. Ms. Keel expects about 30 law enforcement officers — from the Warrant and Pre-Trial Divisions, the Sheriff’s Office, Constables Offices and Fire Marshal’s Office — to be involved on Saturday. People who are unsure if they have active warrants against them are encouraged to contact the Smith County Judicial Compliance Department at 903-590-4624.
