TYLER — According to the Patriot Talon, the charter for The University of Texas at Tyler’s Kappa Sigma Rho Nu Chapter has been disbanded by the fraternity’s national office. Kappa Sigma National Director Mitchell Wilson told the university newspaper the charter was revoked due to a violation of the fraternity’s code of conduct. In April, the fraternity was suspended by UT Tyler for one year following an investigation.
Beverly Golden, Director of Marketing and Communications, for UT Tyler, provided our news partner, KETK, with the following statement regarding the suspension of the Rho-Nu chapter of Kappa Sigma at that time:
“UT Tyler has addressed the questions of inappropriate conduct by the fraternity. The fraternity has been found in violation of the Student Standards of Conduct and has been suspended for one year. The university’s judicial process looks out for the best interest of our students and therefore includes the opportunity to appeal sanctions. We would like to re-emphasize that the conduct in question does not include allegations of sexual assault. However, privacy laws such as the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) limit the university’s ability to release information about the results of disciplinary actions involving students. Therefore, no additional information will be released.”
Allegations were made in early April concerning a private Facebook page made by the fraternity in which “disturbing” pictures were posted. Sources tell KETK the pictures involved drug use and nude women. It is not known if the women were students at the college or pulled from internet pornography sites. The allegations prompted the initial suspension of the fraternity while the investigation was on-going.
Prior to the suspension, posts on the public UT Tyler Kappa Sigma Facebook page had been edited and no longer displayed any recent activity. The last post was dated August 12, 2013. The frat’s Twitter account has not been active since mid-March.
