SMITH COUNTY — An alleged car jacking suspect was fatally shot after a confrontation with officials early Sunday morning. Jeffrey Eugene Brooks, 29, Palestine, had numerous felony warrants, including aggravated robbery for carjacking, aggravated assault on a public servant and multiple evading arrests in a motor vehicle. According to Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith, around 12:15 this morning, numerous law enforcement officers, including members of the Alvin/Pearland/League City Team, Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force and US Marshals Task Force, began surrounding a residence officials had tracked Brooks to. Brooks exited the residence a short time later reportedly holding a firearm and attempted to get away in a car.
As he was leaving, he also attempted to run over law enforcement officers before crashing into another vehicle. Brooks was shot and killed by members of the tactical team. Authorities said any additional information will come from Brazoria County officials.
Brooks was wanted in a multi-incident case that started with a high speed chase and included the theft of a patrol car. According to information from the sheriff’s office, Tyler police received a call around 10:25 p.m. Thursday that a black Escalade had been involved in a disturbance. Officers spiked the vehicle’s tires at Hwy. 155 and Loop 323, but Brooks continued into Tyler and carjacked a vehicle when his was no longer operative, according to officials. Authorities say the victim in that carjacking was held at gunpoint before the suspect took off in the victim’s vehicle. Brooks reportedly wrecked that vehicle at Superior Pawn & Gun Shop in the 2600 block of West Gentry Parkway.
From there the suspect fled on foot until breaking into a Smith County sheriff’s deputy patrol vehicle and fleeing again, according to officials. The pursuit continued north towards Lindale, where authorities say Brooks wrecked again in Wood County and then fled again on foot. The suspect then allegedly stole a white pickup on CR 431 that was later found abandoned on Hwy. 155 South behind the old Loafing Shed/Bootleggers building.
