TYLER — We’ll find out today about the future plans for Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith. He has scheduled a news conference late this morning to discuss his intentions regarding next year’s sheriff’s election. Smith’s law enforcement career spans 3 years with the Gregg County, Texas Sheriff’s Department; United States Department of Justice, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA); and United States Department of Justice, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms (ATF). Two persons announced last month they planned to run for sheriff. They are former jail administrator and Smith County Chief Deputy Gary Pinkerton and retired game warden Chris Green, who lost to Smith in 2012.
