Gohmert Makes Unusual Offer on Iran Deal

WASHINGTON, D.C. — East Texas Congressman Louie Gohmert has an offer — though he admits it’s unlikely he’ll be taken up on it. The longtime Republican lawmaker says he won’t run for re-election if House and Senate leaders “treat the Iran agreement as the treaty it is and as the Constitution requires.” Gohmert spoke with KTBB after initially announcing his offer while sitting in for talk show host Sean Hannity Friday afternoon. Gohmert said he’d file a resolution Tuesday declaring that the Iran nuclear agreement “is a treaty, and…that since it’s a treaty, the House does not get a vote, but 2/3 of the Senate must vote for it, or it is not binding on America.”
Gohmert has joined others in voicing continued concerns about the Iran pact, but he says Republican leaders appear lax on the proposal. He adds, “Obama and crew have said the Iran deal is not binding so it does not require a congressional vote.” Gohmert also says Republican leaders want him out of Congress — and that his offer gives them a chance to get their wish. But he also admits there’s “a 95 per cent chance” that they won’t accept his offer. Congress gets back to work Tuesday following its August recess, and the Iran pact continues to be a hot topic on Capitol Hill.
