I-20 Reopened Following Two Crashes, Two Deaths

GREGG COUNTY – Portions of Interstate Highway 20 in Gregg County were shut down for a while yesterday by two separate accidents. Two persons died in one of the crashes. They are identified as Mauricio Cardoza, 42, of Juarez, Mexico and Roberto Chavira, 35, of San Elizario, Texas. They were in a west bound box truck that is said to have hit a tractor-trailer rig that was parked on the shoulder of the road. The crash happened around 7:30 Friday morning. One of the two persons in the 18 wheeler was taken to a Longview hospital. The first accident occurred some 6 ½ before the fatal wreck. The first accident involved two 18-wheelers, both of which caught fire. No injuries were reported in that wreck. The fatal accident occurred in the wake of the first wreck.
