TYLER — Construction on the improvements to Bergfeld Park playground is underway as of Tuesday. The current playground will be replaced with all new play features for children of all ages. The playground, located on the northwest corner of Bergfeld Park, will be fenced off during construction. Construction is expected to be completed this spring. When the park reopens, visitors will see a unique play area that will include two playgrounds for different ages, a crushed granite trail, landscaping, mulch and seating areas.
Play areas will feature new swings, slides between levels, rotating net climbers, a merry-go-round, a natural boulder climbing area and a toddler play area according to Parks and Recreation Director Stephanie Rollings. “We are excited to see this phase of the master plan getting underway,” Rollings said. “It is going to be a completely new playground that will offer something for everyone.
“The City of Tyler has received more than $225,000 in donations by area churches, businesses, individuals and foundations, Ms. Rollings said. “Thanks to the community involvement and budgeted half-cent sales tax funds, more than $100,000 in additional funds are available for the next phase of the Bergfeld Park Improvement Project,” she added.
The creation of the Bergfeld Park Improvement Project began in March 2013. During that time, there were several meetings, including one held in the park’s amphitheater. The plan was approved by the Tyler Parks Board in late October 2013 Tyler City Council unanimously approved the plan in November 2013.
Phase II of the project will include upgrading “Splasher,” the dolphin fountain, area as well as the signage and landscaping along South Broadway Avenue.
