History:
In Jan. 2014 the Tyler City Council approved a contract with Fitzpatrick Architects, Inc., in the amount of $43,023 to prepare plans and specifications for renovations at the Library. In 2009, the Library became a beneficiary of the estate of long-time patron Joyce Kathryn Findley. The City Council accepted the first part of the bequest, $318,018.13, on Dec. 9, 2009, and the second part, $318,018.22, on March 10, 2010. The total bequest was $636,036.35. The disposition of the bequest was deferred to a later time. “We are so thankful for the funds that were privately donated, which are making these much needed renovations possible,” said City Librarian Mary Vernau. “I can’t wait to see how much these enhancements will benefit our Library patrons.”
The proposed renovations include a children’s reading area and stacks, updates to Taylor Auditorium, renovation of the first and third floor bathrooms, installing exterior signage, and enclosing the covered patio on the east side of the building. “The facility is 34 years old,” added Vernau. “Some updating to the Library is needed. We are very thankful to Ms. Findley for her bequest, which is making these updates possible.”
