National Balloon Champion Crowned in Longview

LONGVIEW – For the third year in a row the U.S. National Hot Air Balloon Championship has been held in Longview. Sunday, it was announced the national champion was John Petrehn, of Kansas City, Kansas. His youngest brother, Paul, was last year’s winner. According to the Longview News Journal, other winners announced yesterday: Bruce Bussey, of Longview was the overall Great Texas Balloon Race winner. Joe Heartsill, of San Angelo was the Texas State Champion. Rookie of the year honors went to Steve Mitchell, of Streetsboro, Ohio.
