E-Cigarette Restrictions in East Texas Continue

Posted/updated on: June 9, 2014 at 12:56 pm

LONGVIEW — Communities around the region are wrestling with how to handle the devices known as “e-cigs.” Longview City Manager David Willard has asked city employees not to use electronic cigarettes at work until a policy committee fleshes out how to address the devices. According to the Longview News-Journal, in his memo, Willard noted the devices, like their more-common tobacco-infused cousins, could be smoked outside of city buildings.

“I have received several complaints lately regarding employees smoking tobacco products and/or using e-cigarettes while at work. I wanted to take a moment to remind everyone of the expectation to follow our city policy regarding use of tobacco products. Employees may not use tobacco products in a municipal building, within 20 feet of a main entrance, or within a city vehicle,” Willard wrote. “I appreciate your cooperation as we continue to provide a professional working atmosphere for our customers and co-workers.”

The city employs about 830 full-time and 45 part-time employees. Both Longview hospitals have ruled out the use of e-cigs for employees or visitors to the hospital. On May 22, the Gladewater City Council voted to ban minors from buying, having or using the devices. Smith County commissioners in April banned the use of electronic cigarettes within and near county facilities. Smith County Judge Joel Baker said there had been increasing complaints and incidents involving electronic cigarettes that prompted the decision.
