MARSHALL — Harrison County Sheriff’s Deputy Matthew Hasler, 32, was identified Monday as the suspected gunman in a Sunday shooting, according to the Marshall Police Department. KETK and the Longview News-Journal report that police said Hasler was taken to the Marshall Police Department for further investigation after the 2 a.m. shooting. The gunfire occurred outside Charlie’s BackYard Bar in the 300 block of North Columbus Street, police said. The victim, 20-year-old Trey Austin Rogers, was listed in critical condition Monday evening at Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview, a hospital spokesman said.
Hasler was off-duty at the time of the shooting, according to the Harrison County District Attorney’s Office. But according to Lt. Jay Webb of the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office, Hasler resigned Friday. “His resignation was for personal reasons,” Webb said in an email. Webb did not say whether Hasler’s resignation was effective immediately or if he was still a member of the sheriff’s office when the shooting occurred.
Police have not said what led to the shooting. “The Texas Rangers are involved,” said Marshall police spokeswoman Sonya Johnson. “As of right now we don’t have any specifics.” Harrison County Sheriff’s Department released a statement Monday morning saying, “due to a Harrison County Sheriff’s Office Deputy being involved in the incident that has occurred,” further information would have to come from the Texas Rangers, who along with Marshall police and special investigators with the Harrison County District Attorney’s Office, are investigating the shooting.
