KETK reports troopers responded to the crash at 4:17 p.m. LA Hwy 765 near its intersection with LA Hwy 764. Troopers say a northbound 2003 Honda Accord driven by Mary Riney, 20, of Frisco, Texas, crossed the center line in a curve and traveled into the path of a southbound 2013 Ford Focus driven by Betty Reynolds, 63, of Carthage, Texas. In an apparent effort to avoid a collision, the Ford veered onto the northbound shoulder and was struck by the Honda. All vehicle occupants were wearing seatbelts. Reynolds received fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Riney and a passenger in the Honda, Taylor Hudson, 21, of Henderson, Texas, received moderate injuries and were transported to LSU Medical Center for treatment. Excessive speed on the part of Riney is suspected to be a factor in the crash. Riney was charged with careless operation. Routine toxicology samples were obtained for analysis, and the crash remains under investigation.
