Heines - 1769TYLER — Tyler Mayor Pro-Tem Martin Heines Friday announced his intention to run for Mayor in the May 2014 election. Current Mayor Barbara Bass is not seeking re-election due to term limits. Heines is the first announced candidate for the post in next May’s election. Heines, 50, a Tyler native, is a small business owner and property manager/investor currently in his second term as Tyler City Councilman for District 4. He’s also served on the Council Audit Committee and the Council Building/Economic Development Committee.

Heines’s involvement in the community has been diverse. He’s served the City of Tyler as a volunteer on several committees including Chair of the City of Tyler International Existing Building Code Committee, on the Steering Committee for Tyler 1st, as a member of the Mayor’s Tyler Leadership Roundtable, and as a member of the Midtown Area Development Committee. Heines is a board member of the TJC Foundation and has served on the Advisory Committee of the University of Texas at Tyler’s Small Business Institute Program.

In the past, Heines has served as President of Heart of Tyler/Main Street, and as a Board Member of the Literacy Council, Historic Tyler, and Tyler Board of Realtors. A graduate of Leadership Tyler Class XV, he also chaired the Chamber of Commerce Governmental Affairs Committee in 2001 and 2002 and was a member of the Chamber’s Vision 2000 and Vision 2010 Committees.

“After serving on City Council for the past 3 years and visiting with many people throughout the community over the past several months, I am excited to announce my candidacy for Mayor of Tyler. I believe my background and experience as a City Council member, as a member of many different volunteer committees for the City, as well as my business background will help me serve effectively as Mayor. I would be honored to be elected to this position,” said Heines.
