ATHENS — Effective Monday, the city of Athens has initiated Stage 1 of the city’s drought contingency plan. City residents are requested to voluntarily conserve water and adhere to prescribed restrictions on certain water uses. According to the city web page, stage 1 indicates mild water shortage conditions. The goal is to achieve a voluntary 10% reduction in daily use. Athens residents are requested to voluntarily limit the irrigation of landscaped areas on and odd-even watering schedule. Residents are also asked irrigate landscapes only between the hours of midnight and 10:00am and 8:00pm to midnight on designated watering days.
