Salvation Army Reinstates Community Lunch Meals

thumb_salvationarmy-4TYLER — Due to what’s termed the overwhelming generosity of the Tyler community, on July 8th The Salvation Army will reinstate the community lunch Monday through Friday 12:15-1:00. This lunch is open to those who are in need but do not reside in the lodge at The Salvation Army.

According to a news release, on June 17th The Salvation Army made the difficult decision to suspend public lunches Monday – Friday as well as close the Social Services office from noon – four o’clock each day. Officials say these budget cuts had the potential to affect over 5,600 people each month but were necessary in order to maintain other essential programs such as Reconnect, the Work Program, Emergency shelter, youth programs, etc. The budget cuts came as a result of regular summer donations being earmarked to recent disasters, lack of federal funding, and a decrease in monetary donations due to a declining economy.

After the Salvation Army put out a plea to the public through newspaper, radio, television, email, and postal mail, the community began responding in what’s termed an enormous way. Due to local supporters and donors, The Salvation Army says it’s excited to be able to say “yes” again to those who are in need of lunch. The news release says the Salvation Army is grateful to Smith County and hopes that with their continued support they will be able to eventually reinstate other programs that are currently suspended. The outpouring of financial support ensures that human needs in Tyler will continue to be met, according to Salvation Army officials.
