NACOGDOCHES — A man has died after exchanging gunfire with two Nacogdoches Sheriff’s deputies. Dead is John Stevens, 41. He died at Nacogdoches County Memorial Hospital following the shooting on County Road 2051 just before 1:00 Monday morning. KETK reports the deputies were dispatched to the area in reference to a disturbance.
They found Stevens with a pistol in his hand. For nearly 45 minutes they negotiated with him, during which time he kept entering and leaving an exterior shop next to the house. When Stevens started walking toward the deputies, and refused to drop the weapon, they used bean bag rounds in an attempt to disarm him. He then hid behind some bushes and began firing at the deputies. Their car was hit several times, but they were not injured. The deputies returned fire, hitting Stevens. Both deputies have been placed on administrative leave while Texas Rangers investigate the shooting.
