Legislature Approved ‘Merry Christmas’ in Schools

AUSTIN — “Happy Holidays” won’t be the only thing teachers and students can say to one another during winter celebrations. The Legislature has cleared the way for “Merry Christmas” and “Happy Hanukkah.” Senator Robert Nichols of Jacksonville says it’s the right thing to do.
According to Nichols, “This permissive bill is about granting schools permission to use traditional winter expressions and displays on school property consistent with Supreme Court precedent. Our school officials and teachers have enough on their plate without having to worry about frivolous lawsuits and retribution for recognizing Christmas and Hanukkah.” The bill would require that if a symbol such as a Christmas tree is displayed, a second religion, or at least one secular scene or symbol, must also be displayed. The bill’s now awaiting the governor’s signature.
