Elderly Man Struck, Killed by Car

MARSHALL — An elderly man has been struck and killed on U.S. Highway 80 west of Marshall. Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Terence Helton said Richard Neil Cunningham, 79, was fatally injured when he stepped into oncoming traffic to retrieve lumber that had fallen from his van. The incident happened about 9:00 Monday night near the intersection of Muntz Cut Off, west of Marshall, the trooper said. According to the Longview News-Journal, the driver of the vehicle that struck Cunningham, Jimmy Williams, of Hallsville, said he did not see Cunningham in the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Helton said no charges will be filed in the case.
