Police urge drivers to slow down

Posted/updated on: July 27, 2026 at 4:47 pm

KILGORE – Police are warning residents to reduce their speeds while driving through construction areas after officers issued several speeding citations last week, according to our news partner, KETK, and Kilgore police. Officers say they gave several dozen citations to motorists speeding through the work area at I-20 and Highway 31. Some drivers reportedly were going over 70 miles per hour through the construction zone, even though the speed limit is reduced to 55 mph, whether workers are on the scene or not.

“Please be mindful of these conditions and remember to reduce your speed when driving through this zone,” the Kilgore Police Department said. “Our goal is to gain voluntary compliance. We don’t care if we write one more citation. We’ve got years of this construction, so safety is paramount.” Those who receive a ticket for speeding through construction areas can expect the fine to be doubled if workers are present in the area, the department said.
