Bitcoin mining concerns aired

TYLER – Tyler Mayor-elect Stuart Hene says communication and transparency will be key priorities for his administration, especially as residents raise concerns about a proposed Bitcoin mining operation near a residential neighborhood.
According to our news partner KETK, Hene, who attended most of the meeting while coordinating with council members to avoid creating a quorum, said the gathering offered an important opportunity to hear directly from residents.
“It was a good opportunity for us to listen and hear feedback, not just from the people proposing the project, but also from the people who live in that neighborhood,” Hene said.
Hene emphasized that the proposal being discussed involves a Bitcoin mining facility, not a traditional data center.
While data centers often prompt concerns about water and electricity consumption, Hene said the city is already considering safeguards for future large-scale industrial projects. Potential measures could include zoning requirements, infrastructure planning and protections for local utility resources.
“We have to be mindful of our water source,” Hene noted, adding that the city can take steps to protect residents from potential noise or air pollution associated with industrial operations.
Hene noted that he has not held discussions with developers regarding any such projects. For now, he said, his focus remains on listening to residents and ensuring their concerns are reflected in the city’s decision-making process.
“My main thing is: I want to hear what the residents want,” Hene said. “If they don’t want this in the neighborhood, that’s obviously something I’m going to listen to.”
