SMITH COUNTY – A woman who admitted to killing a Tyler man in 2017 was given a 20-year prison sentence on Thursday. According to court documents, Jakysia Rodgers, who was recently charged with capital murder in the shooting that killed Joshua Alon McGee, 22, on August 11, 2017, entered a guilty plea to the lesser charge of murder on Thursday. After that, Rodgers received a 20-year sentence. She was already serving a 20-year sentence for an unrelated aggravated assault charge in 2024 prior to the capital murder indictment.

After being shot on East Lawrence Street on August 11, 2017, McGee died in a nearby hospital. Police said they did not think it was a random shooting because they could see a blood trail inside the house. Rodgers and Quadaverine Allison were both charged in the 2017 shooting. His case for capital murder is still pending. Rodgers and Allison were indicted by a grand jury after a detective obtained information that advanced the cold case, according to the police. For aggravated robbery out of Longview, Allison is now incarcerated for 25 years at the Allred Unit. According to court documents, Allison entered a guilty plea to that charge in October 2018.
