TATUM – A safety concern along a stretch of highway in East Texas is getting attention after the Tatum police chief made a public plea for action. The concern is along State Highway 149, from the city limits traveling south to Tatum Middle School, where on Tuesday, an 18-wheeler hydroplaned into oncoming traffic before slamming onto school property.
On Wednesday, Tatum police Chief James Smith made a public plea for action, writing that these recent incidents and dangerous road conditions, especially in wet weather, are putting drivers at risk. The chief says he’s been in contact with city leaders and school officials and has now formally reached out to TxDOT, asking to work together on immediate action. Explaining, the department is ready to work with the state and will keep pushing for change, urging all drivers to use caution along Highway 1-49.
A request for comment was made to TxDOT officials by our news partner KETK. A representative responded and stated that the department will review the location and will contact Tatum PD.
