MOUNT VERNON — A former NBA player and current East Texas resident is looking to make a transition in politics by running for mayor of Mount Vernon in the upcoming May election.
Greg Ostertag and his family moved to Mount Vernon in 2015 and he has since been an active member of the community. He has also been an active member of the school district, volunteering to coach local sports, officiate high school basketball games and serve as a substitute teacher.
Prior to Ostertag and his family moving to East Texas, he spent over 10 years playing in the NBA, including a nine-year stint with the Utah Jazz. Ostertag ended his playing career in 2012 following a brief stint with the Texas Legends.
As he looks to transition into politics, Ostertag said he plans to improve Mount Vernon by updating its infrastructure and utility systems, while also fostering strong relationships with fellow city officials and school board members.
Ostertag is running for the mayoral position against the incumbent and Mount Vernon native Brad Hyman, who has been mayor since 2024. Hyman says he is committed to improving his hometown by addressing utility system and infrastructure needs.
Through his first term, Hyman oversaw several improvements to Mount Vernon, including securing a $9.6 million grant needed to rebuild the city’s wastewater system. During his tenure, the city has also replaced 1.5 miles of old steel lines that had become corroded, needed replacement and updated city technology systems.
“I believe leadership is about serving as a ‘player-coach’—working alongside others and focusing on the success of the team. I’m incredibly thankful for the dedicated staff at City Hall and the city council members who have worked hard to set direction, priorities and goals to move Mount Vernon forward,” Hyman said.
Residents will have the chance to vote for their candidate during the upcoming May elections, with early voting starting on April 20 and election day on May 2.
