SMITH COUNTY -The Smith County Commissioners Court approved a resolution Tuesday, proclaiming March 24, 2026, as “Grace Community School Girls’ Soccer Day” to recognize the team winning the state championship.
The soccer team won the TAPPS All-Around State Championship on March 4, 2026. It was the second time in three years that they brought home the state title.
The girls were joined by dozens of family members and friends for the recognition in Commissioners Court.
Commissioner J Scott Herod, who has a daughter on the team, said it was fantastic to be able to honor the team members for achieving the “significant milestone.” He said he also liked to see high school students attending the meeting to see how local government works.
“Grace Lady Soccer Coaches Chris Hemphill and Emily Bates take the extra time and energy to work with each student athlete to meet their needs and encourage them to rally to support teammates in times of need on and off the field,” the resolution states. The athletes volunteer their time in the community at nonprofit organizations and student advisory boards, as well as stay active in their churches, extending their influence beyond the soccer field.
