Winter driving tips

SMITH COUNTY — Winter driving tips Drivers are urged to take extra precautions as icy conditions have developed on roadways. According to our news partners at KETK and the National Weather Service, the following tips can help people travel safely in icy conditions:

Slow down. Even at low speeds, ice can cause your vehicle to lose traction and slide.
Increase following distance. Leave plenty of space between you and the car ahead in case of sudden braking.

Avoid sudden movements. Accelerate, brake and steer gently to reduce the risk of skidding.
Clear all ice and snow from your vehicle before driving to maintain full visibility.
Do not use cruise control. Hitting a patch of ice while cruise control is engaged can cause you to lose control of your vehicle.
Drivers should also be aware that traffic signals may malfunction during severe weather. If a traffic light is out or flashing:
Come to a complete stop at the intersection.
Treat it as a four-way stop.
Yield the right-of-way to the first vehicle to arrive. If two vehicles arrive at the same time, the vehicle on the right goes first.
Taking a few extra seconds on the road could prevent a serious crash, especially during severe weather that East Texas does not see often.
