NWS to hold storm spotter classes

TYLER – The National Weather Service in Shreveport has announced that its meteorologists will be holding several SKYWARN spotter trainings in East Texas soon.
“The SKYWARN presentation covers severe thunderstorm characteristics, cloud formations, identifying the different threats associated with severe storms, how to report and basic weather safety,” NWS said.
This year NWS meteorologist will be going to the following East Texas locations to conduct these SKYWARN training classes.
Gilmer — Jan. 8, 2026, at 7 p.m. at the Upshur County Electrical Coop Auditorium, 1200 W. Tyler St.
Tyler — Jan. 15, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. at Shiloh Road Church of Christ, 1801 Shiloh Road.
Lufkin — Feb. 5, 2026, at 6 p.m. at the Lufkin Convention Center, 601 N. Second St.
Longview — Feb. 21, 2026, at 9 a.m. at Emmaus Baptist Fellowship, 5128 Estes Parkway.

The National Weather Service (NWS) SKYWARN program was started in the 1970’s and has helped train between 350,000 and 400,000 storm spotter volunteers across the United States. Storm spotters help the NWS see storms from the ground where radar and satellite tools can’t see from.
